Insights for Neurodivergent Writers: A June Digest

Has Anyone Else Melted Slightly This Month - Emotionally and Literally?

Same. So over on Substack, I leaned into the heatwave energy and got real about what writing looks like when your brain’s overwhelmed and your heart’s a bit wobbly.

I explored what it means to be a neurodivergent brain craving connection - the kind that’s soft, real, and doesn’t require masking. I also talked about why sometimes the work for the day is just having a good cry (because productivity isn’t always the goal - sometimes feeling is the work). And I introduced my new creative approach: No Plan, Just Growth - a messy but meaningful shift that’s giving me permission to write without pressure or perfectly colour-coded timelines.

If you took part in the mini writing challenge last week - I hope it helped spark something. If you missed it, there’s an email from me sitting in your inbox from Friday (have a peek!), or you can still find all the details over on Substack or social media.

But for now, grab a cool drink, your current work-in-progress (or that persistent idea that won’t leave you alone), and let’s catch up on everything from me in June.

Gail Doggett - Writing Mentor and Coach

I've been working with writers for two decades, from acquiring fiction and non-fiction at a major publishing house, all the way to being in 1:1 critique relationships, and accountability partnerships.

I bloody love talking about stories, and characters, ideas and I'm also very aware of what it's like to feel stuck and wanting to bang your head on the desk (please don't do that!).

And for all of us neurodivergent folk, as a late-diagnosed ADHDer myself, I also want to reiterate that there's no shame either in getting stuck or just feeling like you can't get yourself together to do this, even though it's all that you can think about. But I do want you to tell your story.

Get in touch, and let's see what we can do together!

Hi, Reader! You've found your way to this corner of the internet maybe via a recommendation from someone I work with, or some flavour of Google search involving "Help for ADHD writers", "How to write a book when you can't focus", or "writing with low spoons". This is a space for the gloriously imperfect, the neurodivergent late bloomers, and the ones who dream of escaping to a cabin in the woods with a stack of books and zero notifications. New: Write Club is Open I've made a place for us!...

So… are you ready for Christmas? Hi, Reader! If “ready” means the presents are wrapped bought, at least one room of the house is presentable, and the out-of-office is on, then I’m not quite there. If I accept that New Years’ Greetings are just as good as Christmas cards, shop-bought mince pies will do fine this year, and I don’t bank too much on being on the Nice List… then maybe. Yes. Wherever you are on the festive readiness scale, I hope you’re able to find a few moments over the coming...

A Gentle Black Friday Invitation to Write Club Hi, Reader! November seems to disappear in a blink, doesn’t it? One minute you’re lighting a candle and promising yourself a peaceful writing hour, and the next you’re caught in the swirl of end-of-year busyness. If you’ve been wanting to carve out gentle, protected time for your writing, the Write Club December trial is your chance to begin. You can join for £9 and take part in three live lunchtime accountability sessions, where you’ll write...
